The Portrait of a Tortoise
Silvia Townsend Warner, Gilbert White
This is a set of extracts from the diaries of Gilbert White, a Victorian naturalist , about a tortoise he inherited from his aunt. More interested in the migratory patterns of the swallow (Where does it come from? Where does it go?), White applies his scientific interest to Timothy and, through this, becomes increasingly fond of him.
With an introduction by the poet, author and musicologist, Silvia Townsend Warner this is the 1946 version, converted from a copy held by Newcastle Libraries.
