The arrival of RNAS Sopwith Triplanes over the Western Fronton February 1917 made a strong impression on German airmen opposing them. Luminaries such as Lt. Kurt Wolfand the great Rittmeister himself recorded the British triplane’s general superiority over their own Albatros D.III fighters. Although some research into the triplane concept had already beenembarkedupon by Germans during the 1915 it was not until the nimble little Sopwith was encountered that a serious‘counter-triplane’ development programme began in earnest.
